August 2014 Dividend Update

August has ended and it is time to tally up the dividends received for this month.  I am anticipating I will likely fall short of my goal this year in total dividends of $2700.  This is mainly because my buying has been put on hold for a couple months because of the cost of school and books these days.  I hope to be more active with acquiring income producing assets in the near future, but have been kind of stuck lately.  I will at least get rid of my car payments altogether in September and own it.  That eliminates about $210 a month out of the expense category.  The nice thing about this strategy is most of my dividend stocks are being reinvested in additional shares.  The portfolio continues to chug along with higher totals and share amounts without me at times.  Once it is set up compounding can really take effect and if you are in a position to add more fresh capital you can reach Financial Independence that much faster.  I encourage everyone to keep on going down this path.  I hope we all get there and achieve our goals.

  1. Good month SWAN keep at it! We are in the same boat. Not much going towards new purchases but the machine keeps moving.

    1. DFG,

Thank you! Tuition is going to hurt for awhile. They offered OT at work for 2 weeks or so and I picked up a bunch of days. 21 of 22 working should help me, but still struggling. I made a little on an option in 3 days, but took the profit. If I waited another day I could have made much more $, but oh well it was good to have a quick gain. More like that will help.

  2. SWAN,

That's a great job there. You're collecting some great dividend income, especially considering your age. Awesome!

Although, that's a lot of companies. If you can manage all of that effectively, more power to you. :)

    Keep up the great work.

    Best wishes!

    1. Dividend Mantra,

I have a lot of REITs and BDCs that pay every month. I have it where the dates each are usually scheduled to pay are spread out through the month and predictable. Prospect Capital (PSEC) looks like it may have to cut the dividend in the future if they don't get it in gear, but they have announced through the end of this year at least. I held it through the other recent scares and should have added when under $9.30 for a short time. I wouldn't suggest some of these to everybody as there is more risk, but I have been happy so far and could handle a rare small cut.

Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate it.

  3. Nice month SWAN from a number of great stocks. You have beaten your amount for each month from last year which is a great achievement.

    1. Gareth,

Thank you! I didn't really look at the month over month totals from last year too closely. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm going to have to check out and see how you are doing over there. I want to follow along with the end goal being freedom.

I hope you are having a good September so far.

  4. Great month Swan. The cost of textbooks is getting out of hand. Even with buying used and online textbooks, you still are forking over a ton of cash. It sadly gets in the way of investing. $158 in August is a great month, especially onsidering August is an off month for receiving dividend income. Keep up the great work and keep on striving to hit your goal! It may seem far away, but you never know whatwill happen if you push yourself!

    1. Bert,

Yeah I rented my books and it was still quite expensive. September is looking to be a pretty nice month. Work offered OT for a couple weeks so I've been working like crazy to try and pay for tuition and books. Even taking a little risk with the option market that has paid off a little so far. I should not fall more than $500 short of my goal worst case scenario.

Thank you for stopping by and the encouragement!
